How To Measure A Rubber Bush For A Quotation

To request a rubber bush quotation, send the part number or drawing together with the inner diameter, outer diameter and length. For bushes with metal sleeves, record the sleeve lengths separately. Clear measurements help identify the component; they do not by themselves confirm fitment or material suitability.

Start with the drawing or part number

Use the original component drawing and its revision where available. Include the vehicle or machine model and the position of the bush in the assembly. If you are measuring a used sample, label it as used and identify visible wear, cracks or distortion. Do not treat a worn sample as the original manufacturing specification.

Record the key dimensions

  • Inner diameter (ID): the diameter of the central bore. For a metal-sleeved bush, identify the bore in the inner sleeve.
  • Outer diameter (OD): the outside diameter of the body or outer metal sleeve. State which surface you measured.
  • Overall length: the full end-to-end length, including any projecting sleeve.
  • Inner and outer sleeve lengths: record each separately if they differ. Include the rubber body length where relevant.
  • Other features: show flanges, shoulders, offsets, slots and mounting features on a sketch or drawing, with their dimensions.

Write the unit beside every measurement, preferably millimetres (mm), and label each dimension. Avoid sending an unexplained set of three numbers: different catalogues may use different dimension orders.

Use suitable measuring tools

A suitable caliper can provide inside and outside measurements. Follow the instrument instructions, keep the measuring faces clean and use consistent measuring force. Avoid squeezing flexible rubber to obtain a smaller reading. If the sample is out of round or damaged, record that condition and send photographs rather than choosing a single reading as the required size.

These measurements are for an initial enquiry. Required tolerances and acceptance checks must come from the agreed drawing or specification, not from the number of decimal places on a measuring tool. For general instrument guidance, see Mitutoyo’s explanation of caliper measurement.

Photograph the bush clearly

Send a side view and views of both ends, plus close-ups of part numbers, markings and unusual features. Label the photographs to match your dimension notes. A ruler can show approximate scale, but a photograph is not a substitute for measured dimensions or a drawing. For an installed part, arrange any removal or access with a qualified technician.

Include application and order details

  • Part number, drawing revision, catalogue item number or sample reference.
  • Vehicle or equipment model, assembly and intended use.
  • Dimensions, tolerances and metal sleeve details where specified.
  • Rubber material and hardness only if known or specified; otherwise mark them as unknown.
  • Operating temperature and exposure to oil, grease, chemicals or outdoor conditions, where known.
  • Required quantity, delivery destination and inspection or documentation requirements.

Appearance alone does not establish the rubber compound, hardness or suitability for a particular assembly. If information is missing, send what you have so the remaining requirements can be reviewed before an order is confirmed.
