Control Arm Bushings: Types, Function and Replacement Signs

Control arm bushings are rubber or rubber-to-metal components fitted between the control arm and the vehicle chassis. They allow controlled movement in the suspension while helping reduce vibration, road noise and metal-to-metal contact.

Control Arms and Bushings: What Is the Difference?

The control arm is a structural suspension link. Its bushings form compliant connections at the mounting points. Bushings on a control arm are therefore components within the assembly, not another name for the complete arm.

In a bonded rubber bushing, the rubber deforms between the connected parts to accommodate the movement allowed by the design. The arm geometry, mounting arrangement and bushing characteristics work together; a similar-looking bush is not automatically a suitable substitute.

Types of Control Arm Bushings

Common types include front, rear and lower control arm bushings. Depending on the vehicle and application, they may use moulded rubber, metal sleeves or a rubber-to-metal bonded construction.

For replacement or OEM requirements, a control arm rubber bushing must be matched to the correct vehicle or suspension assembly. Dimensions, sleeve design, rubber hardness and intended load all affect suitability.

Signs of Worn Control Arm Bushings

  • Steering vibration or pulling
  • Knocking or clunking noises over uneven roads
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Reduced suspension stability
  • Poor wheel alignment
  • Excessive movement in the control arm

These symptoms can also have other causes. The full suspension assembly should be inspected before replacing any component.
